Indonesia warns Google to Block Porn in SERPs or be Blocked

Google Blocked

Google, Twitter and other social media platforms have been warned by the Indonesian Communications Minister, Rudiantara, that they face being blocked in Indonesia if they do not block porn and other content which does not meet the countries guidelines.

The Jakarta Post has quoted Rudiantara, the communications minister: “The worst case is I will not allow them to be in Indonesia,” if these media companies fail to adhere to the countries policies on porn. Rudiantara stated “We are focusing on content. If you violate content then you are violating rules and laws in Indonesia.”

Top executives from Google will be required to attend meeting with government officials to set out the processes they will put in place to ensure the continued blocking of offensive material.

This has the potential to have vast negative effects on the traffic levels from the country to porn sites. Porn sites that have a large audience from Indonesia should monitor the situation and have in place plans to replace any potential lost traffic from the region.

As with most technology there is often a work around and in this instance the use of a VPN could bypass any block the country implements.

Will Google allow itself to be dictated to by a country and if so does this open the door for other countries to apply other policies for further censorship in Google?
